JH & HS Science

Classes taught at DCS:

Earth Science, Life Science, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy, Environmental Science, and Physical Education

Position description at DCS:
7-12 Science Teacher, 7-8 Bible, 9th PE

Professional and Educational Background:
I graduated from South Dakota State University in 2013 with a BS in Animal Science with minors in Chemistry and Agronomy. I had originally intended on pursuing a career as a large animal/mixed practice veterinarian, but felt God calling me to take a different route, even after being accepted into the Vet Program at Iowa State University. I achieved my Master’s Degree in Secondary Education online through Black Hills State University and graduated in May 2015.

I began teaching at Dakota Christian School in the fall of 2014 while still taking my classes online to earn my teaching degree. I now teach the 7th-12th grade science courses.

Childhood and Family Background:
I grew up on a farm near Aurora Center, SD only 3 miles from where I live now! My parents, Norvil & Twila Dykstra, and my 3 younger siblings still reside on the family farm.

My family includes:

Jason, my husband of 5 years, and I have two daughters Brandi and Emberly.

Church Life:
I grew up in the Aurora Reformed Church in Aurora Center, SD, which is the church I still currently attend. Throughout my high school years I was part of our church Youth Group and was fortunate enough to be one of the few who got to attend Rocky Mountain High twice! My husband began attending church with me here and joined a few years ago. My daughter is also baptized in this church as well.

Life Outside of DCS:
In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I love being outside every chance I can, helping my husband, dad, and father-in-law on the farm with field work and livestock. I also love to read, ride 4-wheeler, and hunt in my free time.

Why I Teach at DCS:
I really enjoy getting to work with the upperclassmen in the area of schoolwork that I have been passionate about since high school. Being in a Christian school has been such a blessing! The students are thoughtful and eager to learn and grow in Christ and are constantly teaching me how to be a better Christian as well. The support I receive from a faith and professional development standpoint is truly incredible. The community’s support of the students, staff, and just school environment as a whole is amazing and could not be possible without God’s handiwork!
